Martin Blaney’s Story

“Ever since I was a child I was fascinated with edged weapons, starting from ThunderCats, with ‘lion-O’ who used a double-edged sword that I was absolutely infatuated with.

“My first knife was a Swiss army knife that I had found on the sidewalk when I was 7. My father told me that I could only keep it if I learned how to maintain it. He instructed me on proper sharpening techniques using his Japanese whetstones. I was hooked. In fact, I still use the same stones to this day.

“A few years later, I moved to my mother’s house in the small town of Bodega. Not knowing anyone and living in a town with a population of less than 300, I needed creative outlets. By random chance, three houses down, there was a blacksmith shop. Every chance I got, I would watch the blacksmith forge away, only to never get the opportunity to do so myself no matter how much I asked. I was eventually forced to build my own forge.

“Fast forward 25 years and I found myself laid off from my construction job with a family of four to support. I tried my hand at commercial fishing, then the pandemic hit. Searching for anything that I could do from home to support my family I remembered my childhood dream of making knives. I built a new forge, but this time I was determined to make it right.

“My first knives were gifts to friends and family, who were astounded by the quality of craftsmanship. One year later, Blaney Blades was born. Thanks to the support of my family and friends, we have been able to turn my childhood passion into a family-owned and operated business.”
